Parent type of involvement in the life of their children is paramount to the outcome of that child's life. Studies show that parents are often ill equipped for today's children. This may be as a result of single-parent crisis in US, where the head of the household may be a teenage parent, who may not posses the resources necessary for the upkeep of that child. The result is emotional distress that may result in misbehavior in the child. COHA's ‘Parent Summit' is designed to provide parents, whose children we mentor, lessons on how to not only give more love to his/her child, but to also not give up on what they are doing right. In addition, they are shown ways to better relate to these kids. The summit is held quarterly at the Hinds County Youth Court facility, and usually more that 25 parents show up.
Goal:
To help parents of COHA's mentoring program manage their children better, and to help these children become better citizens of Mississippi .
Objective:
To provide parents quality programs for dealing with youth in crime.
Action Plan:
- Provide quarterly summits for parents where issues and questions will be addressed.
- Utilize parent's survey findings to continue to improve quality of the summit in meeting their needs.
- Involve experts, including psychiatrists and counselors, in planning the summit.
- Plan enriching activities to help keep parents motivated.
- Provide incentives for those that attend most summits.
